GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
Mission First
It was during my senior year at Jackson State University in 2011 when I was referred to Mission First to complete my internship prior to graduation. I had no idea what to expect. However, the person that recommended me to Mission First , Dr. Patricia Kennedy whom is very dear to my heart, always had high expectations for me, and I trusted her judgement. When I first arrived at Mission First, I met Coach Willis Bridges. I didn’t know much about him, and I definitely didn’t know what to expect. I only wanted to complete my internship hours to graduate college. All in all, Mission First and Coach Bridges was one of the most impactful things that could have happened to me during that time. We had a genuine relationship that couldn’t be drawn out. From the mentorship and the prayers together, it was what I needed during those college years. Hence, Coach Bridges and I still have an authentic relationship, we still have those same prayers together, and he is still my mentor!
Mount Nebo
Growing up in my mother’s house, we were required to go to church on Sundays. This was not an option for us. After graduating Leland High School in 2007 and enrolling in Jackson State University, I knew that I needed to find a church home. I can’t say that Mount Nebo was my first stop, but it was definitely my last stop. Mount Nebo was and still is led by a phenomenal leader, Pastor John A. Wicks. He has always been consistent with his message and he delivers a message that not only reached the adults, but the younger generation as well. Over the years, I have been fortunate to serve as the Youth Day speaker and pray on New Year’s Eve Services along with Wednesday night Bible Study. As a member of Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, I am truly grateful to have an awesome leader and have a church family.
Boys & Girls Club Of Central MS
The Boys & Girls Club of Central MS was my very first full- time job after graduating college. In terms, it did not feel like a job to me. I was doing what I’ve always been called by God to do, and that’s mentor our youth. Mrs. Penney Ainsworth, whom was the President at the time, hired me to help carry out her vision, which was impacting our youth. She was very passionate about her role, and she had very high expectations for her staff at the Boys & Girls Club of Central MS. I started my role as a camp director, and I wouldn’t say that I really liked or disliked it, but I had no other choice but to do my job. When you are under good leadership, leaders place you in a role to achieve and thrive within an organization. It was only after about four months when she changed my role from Camp Director to Athletic Director, and it felt like a glow went over my head. I was in my element. We had some of the greatest moments hosting sports leagues for boys and girls. All in all, I truly thank Mrs. Penney Ainsworth for putting me in a position to be successful.
